Kaiji is quite the guy in the sense that he’s really smart but quite the idiot as well. He doesn’t really have a very spectacular life but one day some dude shows up in front of his door saying that he now owes some people a bunch of money. This isn’t the case but a friend of his stabbed him in the back and now Kaiji has to pay off his friend’s debt in some way or another.
There aren’t that many gambling anime out there and probably for good reason as it is a bad thing and I am personally quite against it for the most part. On the other hand, most of the games used in gambling can be really fun and there can be a lot of depth to these games. That is why gambling anime like this can be an absolute blast and freaking awesome to watch. The way they are able to dive deep into the mechanics of a game and find extremely creative strategies and ideas as well as how they can depict the psychological warfare going on at the same time is a joy to witness. That’s also why it’s a little unfortunate not more anime is like this but there are a few reasons other than just not promoting gambling. It’s not that straight forward when creating these stories and the creativity and storytelling isn’t easily achieved. There is also the dilemma of overdoing certain aspects and building up this tension to put the viewer on the edge of his seat of excitement.
All in all don’t gamble but what you can do is watch this awesome gambling anime instead! It’s really good and I can definitely recommend it, especially if you are into anime where it’s really tough to predict what comes next and where your intellect gets challenged as you try to figure out how to win.
Recommendation: Highly Recommended
